newborn baby
This bb has been a great find, thanks for everyones time in contributing!
I'm the father of a 3 wk old girl born with 2 thumbs on her right hand. She's a beautiful & healthy baby and very content with her new life!
Like another reader,we found the 6th digit ourselves which was a real shock but we soon had a visit from a consultant who gave us the good news Amy wasn't in pain or danger.
My real problem is I'm living in China now and, although the healthcare has been great so far, I'm worried about surgery for Amy. They've advised waiting til 5-6 years old before amputating but it seems from other sources this is very late and may affect her development. Any advice appreciated! Thanks

Hi, there is no harm in asking another doctor, just to get a second advice. I suggest you do just that :D

My doctor recommend 1 year old, but that might depend on the thumbs.

Re: newborn baby
Our doc recommended btwn 10 and 12 mos, this allows the child to get used to the hand without the thumb before most fine motor skills begin to emerge. I too would try to find another doc.

I would get a second opinion just to make yourself feel better.

Our son has a second pinky toe so his is a little different than your daughters but we were told by 2 different Dr.s that waiting until 3 is the best thing because it makes it easier to operate on such a small foot and in our DS case they actually have to remove a bone, also the risk of anethesia is less the older the child.

Good luck!
