series
Apparently there will only be 7 books. After the seventh, Harry will be done at Hogwarts. I've got a British friend who told me the 7 years are a typical length for the equivalent of high school in Britain. Now, if JKR decides she has more to tell us about Harry and co. in the future, I doubt I'll complain, but for now there's only going to be 7 books. I don't know, but I think she may be stuck in book 5, because I've heard it may not come out till 2002! In the mean time she's putting out Quidditch Through the Ages and the Magical Creatures books to tide us over. These aren't HP books per se, but they're books mentioned in the HP series and she's writing them as sort of a side-line I think.

i see...so probably 7 books for sure then. I guess at the rate she's going, it'll be done like 2007..my gosh, i might be married by then, hopefully my wife will be into harry potter too. what am i blabbing bout...

Can you tell me anything more about those two other books that she's releasing? What kinda books are they? HP reference books, or are they gonna be stories of their own? Just wondering, thanks.

I think they're more reference books, than stories. All I've heard is, all money made on these books is going to charity and they're going to cost 2.50 pounds (whatever that may convert to in US$ I don't know, but I don't think it's much). Try searching on Amazon, or another bookseller's site. I've seen that you can pre-order them from Chapters (a Canadian bookseller), and you can likly pre-order elsewhere.

I'm pretty sure there will only be seven books, following the current trend of one "year" per book.

Besides, this story does need some closure. We've already hit a major midpoint with the restoration of Voldemort in Goblet. This will need to reach a climax and conclude in Harry's last year at Hogwarts.

I'd say it would be a bad thing to make this an indefinitely continuing series.

Re: only 7 book series for sure???
But the ending could be something like this:

Magic had been banned ever since Voldemort's defeat, but as the small boy walked through the deserted street he saw the names of the shops. "Quality Quidditch Supplies, Magical Menagerie, Eeylops Owl Emporium, Ollivanders..." And as he walked into the Ollivanders shop, he saw a small stick on the floor. He picked it up, and began to swing it around, when quite by accident, he pointed the stick at a vase, and it lifted up, then dropped to the floor with a crash. The boy stared at the stick, then pocketed it and ran to tell his friends.

And then, there would almost HAVE to be another series. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if a James Potter series came out. That would be neat.

Mother is waiting.
