power supply help needed
hi everyone...

i have a problem with a power supply for an ATX tower, on a p4 Mother board.

on 1st boot, the pc started up fine, with the usual beeps that you get wiht a new pc.

The case fan, and the CPU fan all spun, and everything appeared in good working order.

I switched the PC off, disconnected it from the mains, and added my sound card.

I put the pc on again, it booted then switched itself off almost immediately, i tried again, and the CPU fan spun for about half a second then just stopped.. the Case fan did not work at all.

Having removed everything from the PC except for the Processor, heat sink and fan, and trying to boot up again, i still have no success and there is now power going to the PC...

However, my keyboard has a little "on light" which works when i switch the power supply on (using the switch at the back of the atx case). Nothing else works though.

is thre anyway i can test the power supply with an electrical testing kit?

does this sound like a power supply problem or is something else awry.

thanks for your help.

jas :)

Hi
You can hook up a multimeter to your power supply to get readings. Sounds like you could have shorted something out along the way.

Re: power supply help needed
There is a way to test the Power Supply by inserting one end of a paperclip into one of the holes in the 20-pin socket and the other end in another hole of the same socket. If you want to know more about just add a reply here and i'll scan the photo illustrating it in my PC magazine.
Cheers

Edd
