reading instruction recommendations
I just wanted to recommend a reading program that our family really liked. It is both effective and affordable. The title of the book is "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" and it can be purchased new for as little as $14.25. I confess that the cost was one of the big motivators for us, initially. We priced several recommended programs and figured we'd rather spen $14 and discover we didn't care for it than spending $175 to find out the same thing.:\ While the daily stories that they read starting at lesson 13 are a little goofy for us, the kids loved them and we were able to find ways to work in some values lessons as we read them. It is literally 100 lessons and after you finish the program your child is reading at a second grade level. It takes about 15 minutes a day once you get past the first few lessons and all you need is you, the child, the book and a pencil and paper for some handwriting practice. It is scripted so there is basically no way to make a mistake with this and the short lessons keep frustrations low. All three of my children used this and were able to read books independently at the age of four. It gave them a great foundation to build on and my eight year old is now reading Kidnapped in original form on his own. I certainly can't complain about the results! I think it's definitely worth trying if you have any young children asking to learn to read. I found the lowest price and most thorough review from Timberdoodle Co. Their web address is www.timberdoodle.com
Hope this helps someone!

Re: reading instruction recommendations
Hey, my mom taught me how to read using this book!!! :) She has used this book in teaching all of us to read (so far...two are too little right now), I think. I remember reading the stories out loud to my dad and being so proud of myself. I could read!!! :)

Re: reading instruction recommendations
My mom has used that with my little brothers some. The oldest one does better with sight reading so we use that with him more... But the younger one who enjoy sounds, etc, we used the book and it seems really neat! It's amazing how many neat new books and things there are since my mom started homeschooling me! I can't wait to see all the cool things when I have kids of my own.. It'll be awhile. ;) (I'm a homeschool senior.)

Re: reading instruction recommendations
I have to agree with this recommendation. One of my children simply could not *get* blending (or maybe I just couldn't figure out how to teach it :\ ) until we used this book.

Blessings,
