re-shelling
I'm a new player i this class and I need a bit of advise.
I managed to put mk1 escort into a wall on my first outing last weekend. I've pushed the front back a bit on the passenger side and there is a little damage inside the engine bay. I don't hink there is any chassis damage but the car was crashed in the exact same place by the previous owner (exact same corner too) so the body is no doubt much weaker because of this. And the back passenger corner has some damage.
I have a spare shell wich is incredibly straight for its age but has some rust in it (fixable).
So i have two options, get the race car straightend or reshell it.
My question goes out to those who have had experience with either option, I'm after the pro's and con's of each. I know it isn't easy without seeing the car. Just some opinions would be good. ATM I'm leaning toward re-shelling because i can do the work myself, which in theory would make it a bit cheaper.
Bear in mind that in the opinion of CAMS Technical manager, a re-shelled car is deemed to be a new car. Therefore, the cage would have to be re-certified and a new logbook applied for. Also, any grandfather clause provisions would not be transferable.

That is correct Dave about CAMS, but if you dont tell i wont.
I know of a few cars that have risen from the ashes to continue on merrily on the old log book.
Not that i an condoning that sort of thing

Re: re shell
My suggestion would be to find a panel guy who can give it a pull on a rack first, then make the assesment then. it shouldn't cost too much to pull it.
A re - shell may seem easy, but if you think about all the little jobs, it's not as easy as it appears, plus you would probably looking at paint on the new shell also??

Re: re shell
Hi Gordo and welcome to the forum, sorry to hear of the car being bent. I myself and in the throws of a rebuild, as I wrote my shell off last year. We toyed with the idea of fixing it..... but it was a heavy accident, and the car was extensivley damaged. I have got myself a new shell and have started again. In the start I though this wont be too bad a new shell cage and away we go, unfortunateley it is alot more work then you think of to start with. I didnt build the shell I had, mind you it was the only thing I hadnt done so I thought I would have a go it would be a bit of fun I was sadly mistaken, although it is alot of fun it is also alot more work then I had bargained for. I had hoped to be out there this weekend at the start of the project, but we are more like round 3 or 4 i would guess. I think if the car isnt too bad get a price to get it fixed and see what it is then evaluate the situation and see what you can do with the old one. You might be suprised.

Re: re shell
Well i had a good look at my new shell and it doesn't look like the best candidate for transplant, so i guess i'll have to fix the broken one
I have built a race car before so i know how big a job re-shelling would be, but i guess the decision has been made for me. So i'm having a panel beater coming round on sunday to tell me if it is a fix up job or wether i need to keep looking for another shell. I hope she can be fixed for not too much money

Well now... the way i see it is 100% of the escorts that race up here currently beat you, which means i have a 100% chance of smokin you.
And 50% of the escorts beat Dahl, which means i have a 50 % chance of beating him!
Beat that logic

Re: reshelling
Yeah it might take a while to fix, looks like the chassis moved over a bit. Not sure if it's new damage or from when kieth bent it... but yeah needs to be fixed.
